Many of us have wondered if cellulite patches work the way they are suppose to. Getting rid of cellulite is often a frustrating task. It is safe to say that although cellulite is harmless, it is a worldwide problem. Several surveys done have shown that cottage cheese on thighs or abdomen or buttocks may be an issue for as many as 95% of all women. With this many of the population dealing with this problem and many of them actively searching for treatments, it is no wonder that the beauty world has gone on a rampage to develop products that at least claim to treat cellulite. One such product is the cellulite patch. Unlike mesotherapy, which involves visits to a doctor’s office, the cellulite patch claims to be able to reduce cellulite at home. But whether cellulite patches work depends a lot on what is in the product. An example of cellulite patches are a product offered by American Lifestyle (http://www.aragonproducts.com/ ) by the same name (Cellulite Patches). The claim is that if you apply the patch directly to your skin and wrap the area with cellophane exercise to secure it, the patch will be activated naturally by body heat. The directions ask that the patch be worn for 1-8 hours, depending on the gravity of the cellulite. The ingredients of the patch will supposedly be infused in the skin (just as in mesotherapy) to help the body burn fat. The ingredients include herbs such as St. John’s Wort and caramel, as well as nutrients such as vitamins C and B complex. There is no science explaining how these ingredients work to help deliver the claimed results, so its effectiveness is doubtful. Another such product is the Celluli-Patch by Biotherm. The critical ingredient in this patch is concentrated caffeine. Quality research has shown that in addition to behaving as a stimulant when consumed orally, the compound can firm the skin when applied topically (research was done using caffeine-infused gel). Caffeine is able to penetrate the skin and stimulate the production of collagen. Collagen is one of the main structural proteins in the skin and it is broken down sometimes as we age or due to excessive pressure, such as that due to fat accumulation in cellulite. Caffeine when ingested orally is also temporarily burn fat (a cup of black coffee can burn 50 calories), but it is unknown whether this effect takes place when caffeine is administered through the skin. The Celluli-Patch is supposed to be worn 2-3 times a week for 8 hours at a time. Smoother skin may result in a few weeks. Extensive research remains to be done to show the effectiveness of any cellulite patch, even if it does have what seem to be the right ingredients. But other similar products have received enough complaints to prompt the FTC into action. Transdermal Products, a company that sold weight loss patches (which work similarly to cellulite patches) with the key ingredient being sea kelp. The claim was that sea kelp in the patch would help burn body fat. After a series of complaints, the FTC took Transdermal Products to court and won, with the company being ordered to pay $180,000 in fines and refunds. It is safe to say that any patch (cellulite, weight loss) that claims to burn fat will probably not work. Other patches are not guaranteed either, it is a matter of finding research to support the claims of the manufacturer along with trial and error.
