Given that surgery is the most effective way to remove cellulite, it is a treatment many people seek. There are three different types of surgical treatments used to get rid of cellulite and other deposits of subcutaneous fat: liposuction, lower body lifts and laser lipolisis surgery.

With liposuction, your cosmetic surgeon will make a small incision and insert a hollow tube or “vacuum” into your body, using it to “suck away” fat. Lower body lifts are primarily skin treatments, during which your doctor will use surgical procedures that tighten your skin, reducing the unsightly appearance of cellulite. Laser lipolisis harnesses fiber optic laser technologies to zap fat through small incisions in your skin. The treatment that’s right for you depends on the extent of the problem, the amount of fat you want to remove and your overall level of health.

All forms of surgery carry inherent risks. While choosing a plastic surgeon with proven experience is a very important safety measure, the bottom line is that there is never a guarantee that your cosmetic procedure will not result in any adverse side effects.

One of the most prominent risks of surgery is the possibility that the patient will have an adverse reaction to the anesthetic(s). While anesthesiologists are very well-trained in the science of neutralizing these reactions, the adverse effects can be unpredictable and difficult to control in extreme cases.

Scarring and bruising can also occur with any form of cellulite reduction surgery. Removing cellulite necessitates tissue trauma, and while doctors do all they can to help you heal properly and quickly, sometimes bruising becomes severe and permanent scars remain. You can undergo additional cosmetic treatments to reduce the appearance of any scars you might get, but again, even these procedures carry an inherent degree of risk.

Infection can also occur, both internally and at the incision sites. Proper wound care and topical or systemic antibiotics can help, but it’s very important that you take care of any wounds you may have. Your surgeon will provide you with explicit instructions for postoperative care. In extreme cases, though infections can lead to organ failure, which carries a risk of death.

Again, you can minimize these risks considerably by choosing a reputable plastic surgeon. Always double-check a cosmetic surgeon’s credentials against the information at your local medical licensing board, and collect referrals from satisfied past patients. No reputable doctor will ever object to providing you with references.
