Painful cellulite is not often spoken of among women. But the truth is many women suffer from cellulite that has reached a painful state. This happens when the fat cells that make up cellulite become bunch together and put pressure on the skin. Did you know that there is a way to classify the severity of cellulite? The Nurnberger-Muller Scale was developed by two doctors looking for a way to distinguish between different levels of cellulite seen on their patients. To find your level of cellulite on the Nurnberger-Muller Scale you must first conduct a “pinch test”. This test is an easy way to locate cellulite on the body even when it may not be visible at first. Simply pinch the skin on your outer thigh between your index finger and your thumb. Check to see if there is any visible cellulite. You can then move to other regions of the body including the abdomen, arms and buttocks. Based on the results of the pinch test, you can determine your level of cellulite on the Nurnberger-Muller scale: Stage 0 – No dimpling when the subject is standing and lying down. The pinch test can show folds in the skin, but no cellulite is visible. Stage 1 – No dimpling when the subject is standing or lying down however when pinched, the skin shows signs of cellulite. Many thin women claim not to have cellulite, but they have dimpled skin during the pinch test. Stage 2 – Dimpling is present when standing only. This is often due to the position of the fat and muscle cells when standing. Stage 3 – Dimpling is visible when both standing and lying down. At this stage cellulite can become painful depending on where it is located and how much fat is present. Cellulite that is painful should be examined by a doctor. Some women report just a dull achy feeling to their skin in certain areas. Other women notice pain when performing certain movements or when sitting or laying in certain positions. The painful cellulite often signifies the presence of too much fat on the body. Too much fat can lead to serious health problems such as diabetes and heart disease. It is important to not only reduce your cellulite, but to maintain a healthy body weight as well. Cellulite can be affected by many things – changing hormones, unhealthy diets and lack of exercise. Make sure you are taking care of yourself well enough that you don’t get painful cellulite.
